How should Parliament increase Britain's industrial production?

  1. In the report Observations on the Loss of Woollen Spinning, 1794, the author sees that using new inventions such as the Spinning Jenny,"one girl turning that wheel, may do the work of One Hundred Hand Wheels." He believed that "20 Girls [could] do the work of 2,000 Women and Children." The girls were also "[s]hut up from morning till night" for maximum efficiency and profits. This primary source shows the master's eagerness to produce more and more due to the high demand for good cloth. The new invention only adds to this production, making it even more profitable to be in the textile industry in Britain at this time.

    1. How did England's extensive influence in poorer countries drive England to produce textiles?

  2. In order for Parliament to increase Britain's industrial production, it has to be even more rewarding to start businesses and easier to maintain them and collect profits. There has to be less regulations and taxes and unions have to be prohibited. The working class will have to be exploited even more while the rich get richer, rewarding intelligent people to make even better inventions, increasing efficiency even more.

    1. What might Parliament pursue to increase (or preserve) industrial production gains without diminishing regulations? Social movements like the Levellers from nearly a century ago issued the following claim:

"· Power to be vested in the people
      · One year Parliaments, elected by equal numbers of voters per seat. The right to vote for all men who worked independently for their living and all those who had fought for the Parliamentary cause
      · Recall of any or all of their MPs by their electors at any time
      · Abolition of the House of Lords
      · Democratic election of army officers
      · Complete religious toleration and the abolition of tithes and tolls
      · Justices to be elected; law courts to be local and proceedings to be in English [not French!]
      · Redistribution of seized land to the common people" (See http://libcom.org/history/1642-1652-diggers-levellers for more details)

This threatened British upper classes once before. Reducing taxes and further restricting unions might incite instability and even class warfare. What other methods have merit?

    1. Justify why you think the price of super fine cloth decreased so much over the 10 years.

    2. I believe the price of super fine cloth decreased so much is because of the supply and demand of the time. In the beginning not a lot of it was produced so people would pay more for it, but after a while supply started to equal demand and the price went down.

  5. Assume that Britain didn't receive that many immigrants as cheap labor. Explain how this single factor could have changed Britain's industrial productivity

    1. If Factory managers had not received such cheap and endless labor from immigrants, employers would have found it harder to make a profit and enforce strict rules. Because of the cheap labor, more profits could be used to reward the investors, increasing their interest in creating more factories. With the endless supply of potential employees, managers didn't hesitate to fire those who didn't comply to their strict working hours and conditions, increasing productivity.
